How to Export Tokens for Roll20

The right sizes, formats, and upload workflow — so your tokens look sharp on the grid.

Roll20 Token Sizes by Creature Size

Tips for Roll20 Token Quality

Use transparent PNGs

Roll20 renders transparency correctly. Avoid JPG — it adds a white background behind circular tokens.

Match pixel size to grid

280px = 1 grid square. A 560px token placed on a 1×1 cell will work but look identical to 280px — use the right preset to save file size.

Check your campaign grid

If your Roll20 campaign uses a custom grid size, scale proportionally. The default 70px/cell × 4 = 280px.

Roll20 Token FAQ

Yes. Roll20 accepts WebP, but transparent PNG is usually the safest default for compatibility and predictable image quality.

Use size-matched exports: Large 560px (2×2), Huge 840px (3×3), and Gargantuan 1120px (4×4+). Then resize on the map to the same grid footprint.

For Roll20, export Large creatures at 560px and Huge creatures at 840px. This keeps the token crisp while matching 2×2 and 3×3 map space.

For circular tokens, yes. Transparent PNG avoids white corners or background blocks and gives cleaner results on dark or textured maps.
